Bunion is a common name for an orthopedic disease, which is referred to as hallux valgus. Hallux vulgaris refers to lesions occurring in the area of the first metatarsal joint that connects the first toe to the metatarsus. Bunions are more common in women.

Hallux valgus, commonly known as bunions, occurs when the ankle of the first joint of the foot is excessively prominent, and the big toe becomes unnaturally tilted towards the other toes. There is inflammation in the joint and there is a thickening of the bursa. This leads to an increasing increase in degenerative changes and prominence of the ankle and moving the big toe towards the other toes and deformation of the foot, as well as intensification of pain.

The primary cause of hallux valgus is genetic tendencies. This condition runs in families. It is associated with the structure of the foot and the flaccidity of tendons and ligaments. Bunions are favored by overweight and wearing shoes with high heels, especially those with narrow noses that squeeze the foot and cause excessive strain on the heads of the metatarsal bones. Symptoms of bunions are; pain at the base of the big toe and in the middle of the foot intensifying when walking. Pain in the bulging bone appearing at rest, even at night. A symptom of bunions is also transverse flat feet, i.e. the fall of the transverse arch of the foot, the one between the big toe bone and the bone of the little toe.

Treatment of bunions must be started early, using exercises to delay the appearance of bunions. Treatment should be initiated when symptoms occur due to the progression of the disease in case of negligence. A good method is to change shoes to wider ones and give up walking in heels, or significantly reduce the use of high heels. If we already put on heeled shoes, it is worth buying slightly larger ones, so that the insole supporting the transverse arch of the foot can fit.
